Description:

LPR erected 1200 tons of structural steel and 60 pieces of equipment to complete a manufacturing facility for CARBO Ceramics Inc. in McIntyre, GA.  The $62 million facility will double the company’s existing region capacity and annually manufacture 250 million pounds of product.

CARBO Ceramics Inc. leads the world in production and supply of ceramic proppants which are high-strength spherical pellets used in the process of hydraulic fracturing of oil and natural gas wells.  Through this process, a highly viscous fluid is mixed with the pellets to form a slurry.  The slurry is then pumped with a high enough pressure into the well to enlarge the fractures in the rock formation where the gas or oil is contained.  Once the pressure is removed, the fractures remain filled with the proppants which create a more readily flowing pathway for the gas or oil to move through.  As a result, production rates are increased by using the more uniform sized and high strength ceramic proppants in lieu of the traditional approach of using sand-based products for this process.

Including the new plant in McIntyre, GA, CARBO Ceramics has a total of four facilities for storage and distribution in the U.S., plus global facilities in Europe, Canada, Australia, China, Singapore, and the Middle East.
